Table 1. Cybertruck vs F150 Features

To further understand the difference between the Tesla truck vs F150, we should look at each truck in more detail. Next, let’s look at the Tesla Cybertruck pickup truck.

The Tesla Cybertruck

Cybertruck’s History: An Overview

In 2012 when Tesla Inc. CEO and product architect Elon Musk expressed the company’s desire to create a truck that would match the capabilities of the Ford F-250. In 2016, Musk mentioned their plans for coming up with a modern consumer pickup truck. They wanted to launch something extremely new to the public — something that would remarkably augment the truck-driving experience to the next level.

In 2017, they announced their decision to make the truck’s size and other features comparable to the Ford F-150. And in 2019, Tesla Inc. filed under the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for “Cybrtrk” and the “Cybertruck” graffiti-themed logo. In the same year, Musk also provided a brief description of the vehicle, talking about its futuristic appearance.

In July 2020, Tesla started accepting pre-orders for as low as US$100.

Cybertruck’s Features

Musk and the remaining Tesla team delivered a futuristic pickup truck because they said they would. Not to mention that they wanted to introduce to the public a game-changing one; hence, the cyberpunk appearance of the Cybertruck.

But there’s way more to this pickup truck than its appearance. If you think it looks seriously tough, it’s because it is indeed seriously tough. Tesla is confident that its innovation can challenge all the best-selling pickup trucks in the market today. Let’s then take a further look at its features.

Performance, Transmission, and Engine

The Tesla Cybertruck is available in three electric motors. One of which is a single-motor truck that features rear-wheel drive. In comparison, the two other motors have the all-wheel-drive feature.

According to Tesla, the single-motor model can go from zero to 60 miles per hour (mph) in a matter of 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 110 mph. The dual-motor model can go from zero to 60 mph in exactly 4.5 seconds and top out at 120 mph. The triple-motor model can reach 60 mph in a matter of 2.9 seconds and have a top speed of 130 mph.

The approach and departure ramp angles of the three models are 35 and 28 degrees, respectively. All models feature adjustable air suspension. You can raise or lower it on the fly and have a maximum ground clearance of 16 inches. Nonetheless, it seems like the Cybertruck is one powerful off-road machine.

Payload and Towing Capacity

Tesla claims that the Cybertruck triple-motor model has a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds. If that’s the case, it surpasses the maximum towing capacity of the F150, which is 13,200 pounds. In terms of towing capacity, F150 vs Cybertruck, the latter is better.

As expected, the lower models have lower maximum capacity but comparable to that of other pickup trucks. The single-motor model can tow a maximum of 7,500 pounds, while the dual-motor model can tow a maximum of 10,000 pounds.

All models feature a 6.5-foot cargo bed that is capable of hauling approximately 3,500 pounds.

Battery Life, Charging, and Range

Tesla has not yet announced the battery sizes, but it is confirmed to support 250-kilowatt charging. All models will definitely have access to the company’s Supercharger technology.

In terms of driving range, the single-motor model features 250-plus miles per charge. The dual- and triple-motor models feature 300-plus and over 500-plus miles per charge, respectively.

Cargo, Comfort, and Interior

The Cybertruck may look futuristic, but it also promotes minimalism. But we can never equate minimalism simply because there is definitely nothing simple about this electric pickup truck.

The Cybertruck’s interior has a plain dashboard with a single touchscreen and features a squared-off steering wheel. It has a seating capacity of six, including the driver. The cargo bed is 6.4 feet and provides a volume of 100 cubic feet. The truck’s slide-out tailgate is so cool. The tailgate is useful as a ramp to load motorcycles and even four-wheel vehicles.

Aside from the 17-inch touchscreen mounted on the dashboard, Tesla has not announced anything yet in terms of the pickup truck’s infotainment system. For sure, it will have high-tech and state-of-the-art features.

Driver-Assistance and Other Safety Features

The self-driving Autopilot technology launched by Tesla will be one of the special features of the Cybertruck. A Full Self-Driving option may be incorporated for US$7000. Perhaps, this new driver-assistance technology will also be announced by Tesla, specifically created for the Cybertruck.

But these features will still be tested and approved by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Maintenance and Warranty Coverage

A comprehensive warranty for the three Cybertruck models will be provided by Tesla. But complimentary maintenance coverage will not be part of it.

We’ve looked at the Cybertruck in our comparison of the F150 vs Cybertruck; next, let’s look at the details of the Ford F150 pickup truck.

The Ford F150

The F150’s History: An Overview

The Ford F150 is only one of the series of trucks under the Ford F-Series. The first-generation F-Series pickup truck was launched in 1948, but it was only in 1992 when a submodel of the F-150 was created. The other models under these series include the F-250, the F-450, and the F-650, among others.

Pickup trucks have always been known as work trucks mainly because of their hauling and towing capabilities. Then, family-friendly trucks were introduced in the market, which made pickup trucks even more popular. But their popularity remarkably increased when F-150 was launched, allowing truck owners to combine work and play.

F150’s Features

Ford has successfully transformed people’s perception of pickup trucks from merely a work truck to a luxury cruise machine. What was once popular only among workers has now become exceedingly popular among families.

This is, perhaps, why Ford always makes sure that their pickup trucks are not only made of high-grade materials. They also ensure that the truck’s appearance is enticing to the general public.

Let’s take a look into the features of the F150 and see which is better between Tesla vs F150.

Performance, Transmission, and Engine

The Ford F150 is famous for having a state-of-the-art engine such as its 3.0-liter diesel, ideal for torque measuring 440-pound-feet. When compared to the performance of other engines, the F150 always ranks the best among the best.

When it comes to its air-spring suspension, rival trucks offer more ride comfort, especially over harsh bumps. But then, I don’t see this causing any problem at all.

Payload and Towing Capacity

The F150 twin-turbo V-6 pickup truck has a towing capacity of 13,200 pounds. For the F-150 that doesn’t include the Trailer Tow package, both the V-6 and V-8 engines can tow a maximum of 7,000 pounds.

Cargo, Comfort, and Interior

The F150 is famous for providing both convenience and comfort to the driver and passengers. The interior is spacious and features a state-of-the-art touchscreen infotainment system, offering the ultimate driving and riding experience.

It features massaging seats, particularly advantageous among the elderly or those suffering from body pains caused by long rides. These seats are useful when you’re stuck in heavy traffic too.

Speaking of heavy traffic, this would not be that horrible anymore, not only because of the massaging seats. F150 features a panoramic sunroof that appeals to both drivers and passengers as they can enjoy the open air as if they are in a convertible car. When it comes to the Tesla vs F150 for comfort, the F150 is hard to beat.

Driver-Assistance and Other Safety Features

The IIHS has tested and approved the safety features of the F150. In fact, the institute has rated this truck as the safest pickup truck available in the market since 2017. Among its key safety features is the availability of the following:

  • Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping seat
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection

Maintenance and Warranty Coverage

The Ford offers limited and powertrain warranties, particularly for the F-150. This may not be extensive but are nonetheless competitive. To enumerate:

  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
  • Powertrain warranty coverage of 60,000 miles or five years
  • Limited warranty coverage of 36,000 miles or three years
